Musical Inspiration

I know it’s happened to you: You’ve been driving down the road, jammin’ to the radio (or if you’re like me, listening to your iPod) and all the sudden you get the BEST idea for a scene in your book. It’s called inspiration, and for me, it often comes in the form of music.

This week it’s Uprising by Muse. Not a group I usually follow, but I heard the song on a movie trailer and badaboom-badabing! Instant scene idea! I’ve probably listened to it a fifty times, and each time the details become a little more concrete.

When this happens, I usually grab my notebook and make some notes. If I'm lucky, the scene will actually fit somewhere in my story. If not? Well, it's still fun to imagine, and maybe the scene will work in another book.

So what inspires you? Is it music? Poetry? Sitting outside listening to the birds sing? Tell me what gets your creative juices flowing.

For me, inspirations often hit when I'm in a shower and in bed, just before falling asleep. Those are the only times I allow my mind to just wander -- that's the best environment for inspiration.

I adore that Muse song. One of my WIPs had a playlist, and I added it as soon as I heard it.

Like you, I totally let music insipire me. And movies. I don't discriminate :D

Great post!

well I'm going to be corny... the music of life is what inspiraes me. People talking, birds singing, whatever is happening right then...even grandkids fighting... and yes Jana the sound of my own voice releasing the the what if in my brain.
Jana's favorite word when we are talking about her book is ...or maybe .... I'm a small detail critiquer. I see small things that changes a story or makes the scene seem unreal.

I like visiting hitorical places or just taking a walk in the woods. I always wonder what it was like back then? And then I fill in the blank.

Your post really 'struck a chord' (pun intended) this has happened to me several times (and yes it is usually while driving - go figure ...) but sometimes I can't quite figure out the scene and the music are even ralated! suffice to say that music is that creative energy that must bring out other good ideas - even unrealated ones>

I'm like Sandy--ideas hit me right before I fall asleep or in the shower. LOL! Kind of annoying. :)

Definitely! In fact, the Miranda Lambert song "House that Built Me" recently inspired a scene in the book I'm going to start soon.

I'm usually in the shower when an idea strikes.
